Short Film Unit

Alright, here we are at the end of the road. We will be working in our groups to create short films that will demonstrate everything we have learned up to this point in AVTF 1. This assignment will cover pre-production (script - storyboard - scouting - and all things creative) production (all of our shot types - continuity - matching action) post production (editing - audio control - sound design)

Please review this website for some pointers on how to make a short film:

Watch the following videos: (if you have trouble viewing them, let me know and I'll come log into your edit bay so we can view them)

Materials Needed:
AV Script Template
Storyboard Template

After you have completed that please see me for your assignment. It will be based on your skill level from the following tiers. Once you are assigned a project from one of the following tiers, please look over the rubric and expectations before beginning pre-production.

Tier 1: Movie Scene
You will create a short movie style scene from an existing script. Modifications to script might be necessary and a completed storyboard is required before production.

Tier 2: Mood Video

Tier 3: Short Film
You will create a short film that will not run longer than 3 minutes. This is patterned after the Cobb County Film Festival. I have a attached a screenplay template that you will want to use for scripting purposes. Please look over the project carefully before beginning.

AVTF 1 Audio Unit

Here are the materials you will need for our audio unit. Please make sure to follow each step in order.

1st: Please watch the screencast video for recording audio located here. The next screencast, Sound Design and Foley will help you understand sound design and the importance of foley sounds.

Audio PowerPoints - Please add these to your notes
Recording Audio
Sound Design

2nd: Complete the ch. 6 w.s. packet (located on front desk) and place in the bin up front when finished. Use the book to complete.

3rd: Watch the following video. It is a great resource for creating foley sounds. Foley Artist

4th: Film Riot Sound Design also has some great ideas on how to create sound into a scene that has all audio removed.

5th: The goal in this unit is to create full sound design for an existing video. Please look over your rubric. Sound Design Project and Rubric It has everything you need ready to download and print. Please make sure you go through the various sounds you will need and materials you will need to create them. You may also use the internet for some sounds, but this project does require foley. Below you will find some websites that can prove useful. Here is the video you will create sound for Sound Design Project Video and it is also ready to be loaded in your assets folder from Deathstar if you prefer. Below you will also find an example from last year. All paperwork must be shown to me before production and will be turned in at the conclusion.

Sound Design Example: Darth Spiderman Sound Design

Websites for sounds:
Soundeffectsplus.com
It's free, but requires a registration to login as most sites do.

AVTF 1 Pre-Production Unit

Here are the materials you will need for this Unit. Be sure to follow all of these steps in order before attempting this fairly difficult project

1st - Watch the video on Pre Production here. Review and Print (if necessary) the powerpoint for Broadcast Script Terms

2nd - Watch the screencast for storyboarding here . I have also included Storyboarding basics to help. If you think you have to be a good artist to draw an effective storyboard, then think again. Here is a video about how anyone can storyboard -  Storyboarding as a bad artist

Good Storyboard Example

3rd - Using the Storyboard Template successfully create a working storyboard for the scenarios listed. Each storyboard must contain 6 shots with an accurate description for each shot. Each group member must complete.

Storyboard Assignment

4th - Watch the Scriptwriting Screencast here. Use this Script Template to tell a story (1:20 - 2:00) of the day in a life of an inanimate object. The script should be at least 2 pages in length and include shots and dialogue. Work as a group to write the story. Remember that all stories have a beginning, middle, and end.

5th - Finally, your video project for this unit will be to create a video for a Day in the life of _____. You can find the rubric here. The video will contain spoken dialogue and will continue to focus on matching action and continuity. No human faces can be shown. This is about the object, not the person. You will adjust your script and create a full storyboard before filming. Please look over the rubric carefully.
